CA Salary in India (2026): What a Chartered Accountant Actually Earns

Updated 17 August 2026 9 min read

There are two numbers circulating about CA salaries in India, and they are wildly apart. One says a fresher earns ₹3–5 lakh. The other says ₹12–13 lakh. Students planning years of their life around this deserve to know which is real.

On 1 May 2026, ICAI Secretary Jai Kumar Batra addressed this directly, putting the average starting package for a qualified CA at ₹12–13 lakh per annum and international offers above ₹50 lakh. This guide works through ICAI's own placement data, then sets out honestly who does earn less — because both numbers describe real people.

What ICAI's own data shows

ICAI runs a campus placement programme twice a year, and unlike survey-based salary sites, it reports what employers actually offered. These are the most recent figures.

  • The 64th placement had more vacancies than candidates — roughly 1.53 jobs for every qualified CA who took part.
  • The highest domestic package rose from ₹26.60 lakh to ₹32.33 lakh between editions.
  • All India Rank holders are placed first and typically command the top offers.

Why you also hear ₹3–5 lakh

Both numbers are true about different groups of people, and this is the part most salary articles leave out.

ICAI's campus placement figures come from a self-selected pool: newly qualified CAs who registered for the programme, and employers who came specifically to hire them — large firms, banks and corporates with structured pay bands. That is not every CA who qualifies in a year.

Outside campus placement, starting pay is genuinely lower. A CA joining a small or mid-size practice in a tier-2 or tier-3 city, or starting their own practice, will often begin well below the campus average and build income over years rather than arriving at it. Neither route is wrong. But you should plan knowing that ₹12–13 lakh describes the campus route, not a guarantee attached to the qualification.

  • Campus placement average: a filtered pool of candidates and employers.
  • Off-campus and small-firm starting pay: commonly lower, with slower early growth.
  • Own practice: lowest at the start, and the highest ceiling of the three over a career.

How CA salary grows with experience

The starting number matters far less than the curve. Chartered Accountancy is a profession where earnings climb sharply in the first decade as you move from executing work to owning outcomes.

Published salary ranges vary by source and should be treated as indicative rather than precise, but the shape is consistent: a substantial step up around three to five years as you take on review and client responsibility, and another at the point where you lead a function or make partner.

  • Freshly qualified: the campus average sits at ₹12–13 lakh, with a wide spread either side.
  • Three to five years: the first significant jump, as review and client ownership begin.
  • Senior roles and partnership: the widest spread of all, because pay ties to the business you control rather than a band.

What actually moves your package

Four things separate a CA at the top of the range from one at the bottom, and three of them are decided before you qualify.

  • Rank. All India Rank holders are placed first at campus and receive the strongest offers. This is the single largest lever, and it is decided in the exam hall.
  • Attempts. Clearing in fewer attempts signals consistency to recruiters and gets you to earning years sooner.
  • Articleship. Where you trained and what you actually did there is the first thing an interviewer probes. A good articleship with real exposure outweighs a marginally better academic record.
  • Domain. Specialisms such as international taxation, transfer pricing, valuations and forensic audit command premiums over general practice.

What the qualification costs against what it pays

In the same May 2026 remarks, the ICAI Secretary noted that the CA course itself costs around ₹80,000 — registration, study material and examination fees across Foundation, Intermediate and Final.

Set that against a ₹12–13 lakh average starting package and the return on ICAI's fees alone is unusual among Indian professional qualifications. The honest caveat is that ₹80,000 covers institute fees, not coaching. Where students take coaching, it frequently costs several times ICAI's own fees, and that is the real variable in what CA costs a family.

How CA pay compares to CS and CMA

CA is the broadest of the three Indian commerce qualifications, and pay generally reflects that breadth. CS is a specialist corporate-governance and compliance qualification; CMA sits closest to costing and management accounting. Both are respected, both lead to solid careers, and both typically start below CA at comparable experience.

If you are still deciding, choose on the work rather than the starting number. The gap at qualification is smaller than the gap created ten years later by doing work you are actually suited to.

The part that decides your number

Every lever above traces back to the same place: how well you clear the exams, and in how many attempts. Rank affects placement, attempts affect both when you start earning and how recruiters read you, and both come down to preparation.

The students who clear in fewer attempts are not the ones who read the most. They are the ones who know exactly which concepts are weak and repair those first, instead of re-reading chapters they already know.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average CA salary in India?

ICAI's Secretary put the average starting package for a newly qualified CA at ₹12–13 lakh per annum in May 2026, based on campus placement. International offers cross ₹50 lakh. Off-campus and small-firm starting pay is typically lower.

What is the starting salary of a fresher CA?

Around ₹12–13 lakh per annum through ICAI campus placement. Outside campus placement — smaller firms, tier-2 and tier-3 cities, or your own practice — freshers commonly start well below that and build up over time.

What is the highest CA salary in campus placement?

₹32.33 lakh per annum was the highest domestic package at ICAI's 63rd campus placement, up from ₹26.60 lakh at the previous edition. International offers reported by ICAI exceed ₹50 lakh.

Is it true that CA freshers earn only ₹3–5 lakh?

That figure does not match ICAI's campus placement data, which the institute publicly addressed in May 2026. It can reflect reality outside campus placement — small practices, smaller cities, or the early years of your own practice — but it is not the campus average.

Are there enough jobs for qualified CAs?

At ICAI's 64th campus placement there were 8,911 vacancies against 5,834 participating candidates — roughly 1.53 jobs per candidate, meaning more openings than CAs available to fill them.

How much does the CA course cost?

ICAI put the course cost at around ₹80,000 across Foundation, Intermediate and Final — registration, study material and exam fees. Coaching is separate and often costs considerably more than ICAI's own fees.

Rank and attempts decide your package. Both come down to preparation.

Geniestudy's concept-wise CA practice names the exact concept behind every wrong answer, not just the chapter, then proves the repair held in a timed mock — so you clear in fewer attempts instead of re-reading what you already know.
